New details in Lower Austrian dungeon incest affair

New details appeared in the unbelievable dungeon incest affair of Lower Austria.
The victim, who was raped by her father the first time when she was 11 years old, tried to escape two times from her home.
The second time was in August 1984, and this was one time too much for her father. He decided to etherise, and displace her into the cellar. His wife and the police he told that she escaped a third time. Nobody was able to find her again.
In the cellar he continued to rape her almost every day. During the last 24 years, the victim gave birth to 7 children. One died because of a lack of medical care during the birth. 3 lived with her mother in the cellar, and the other three officially upstairs as foundlings on the first floor.
The man told he has found them always infront of his door. It’s told those three children lived a normal life, are known as very friendly and popular in the neighbourhood, and very good at school.
The victim was able to escape out of her prison when one of the children was brought fatally ill into hospital. Because the girl is suffering under a strange and serious disease, the doctors were searching for the biological mother through the medias. This was the chance for the victim to convince the father to let her go, and visit the suffering daughter in hospital.
Now the police has also found the dungeon. The place was secured by an electrical number code, and consists of several bed rooms, as well as a kitchen and a toilet. All rooms had only a height of 1,70 metres. The victim was only able to walk crouched. She looks much older than 44 years, and has grey hair.
This is really a sad piece of news for anyone who believes in family values.This man must be punished severely for his crimes that no one else deven dares to think of committing such an horrendous crime

This is beyond imagination. It is unbelievable that nobody else knew or noticed that something strange was going on.
The wife may be innocent but how could someone let go of the disappearance of a family member in the first place? No thorough searches, investigations? Help sought? What about the school teacher(s)… since the child did not show up anymore in school, did they never investigate where she was??? The neighbors? The relatives? Why???
This man has taken the youth of her own daughter and give her even more miserable life. A mentally-fit individual could not have the heart to do this, only demons and monsters. God bless your soul.
This has been a most disturbing, unsettling story to read of. Along with so many around the world, my heart, thoughts and prayers go out to Elisabeth, her children, above and below, and her mother, who must all be dealing with such shock. One can only hope for the very best outcomes for all concerned.

This is a unbelieveable, horrible story! I did not sleep well to think that someone had to live under such conditions. I don´t think I could have lived thru that! As far as some of the comments on here that I have read, I agree with and others I do not. This is not a religion thing, nor a society thing. It could have happened anywhere where this is some sick person like him. I have a home in Las Vegas and live with my husband here in Austria, not far from Amstetten, and find the Austrian people very family oriented and not uncommon to have 3 generations living in a house. People here are in shock over this. I find most people very nosey here and I had more privicy in Las Vegas then in the village that I live in, everyone knows everyone else´s business! My daughters went to school here and families are very involved with school and so forth. I am really in shock that this happened in Austria and I am sure this will be a wake up call, I just feel bad that this beautiful country has this horrific, shocking thing happen!!! This evil man is now in the St. Poelten jail, which is where I go shopping! I would personally like to go in that jail and hang him myself! My prayers are for Elizabeth and all the children.

i have so many questions it sickens me to think of all of them. if she and the children were imprisoned for so long, i am sure repairs, just normal plumbing, water usage had to be explainable, and his bank account having less money to feed two family…how did the wife not realize this or the other kids? what about extended family? actually, i am always sometimes shocked at how people know so little of their extended family. i simply do not believe that no one in that large family did not notice any behavior problems.

Everyday I seem to find some reason to say-what is wrong with people, but this guy really is just beyond words. Was no one looking for this woman? Did she not have any friends when she was 18? She just vanished and that was that??? He said he wanted to keep her away from drugs. Letting this guy say such ridiculous things publicly is just more of an insult to this woman. Because as Sonja says here the people in this part of the world are just too busy living a dream they by the way, never will achive. Mohammed. You make a good point. “It is not good for man to be alone,” the Bible says. Loneliness is not a good thing. Surely neighborliness is not a unique attribute of Middle Easterners, though. And apparently this man was not “lonely.” That was not his issue. He was married and had many children. So is that argument relevant for this situation? I think he was like a lot of men — narcissistic, selfish, evil. That is man in general, since the beginning of time. The Bible is fraught with examples of selfishness and hedonism. They are not unique to the west, or this period in history. The loneliness of a lot of Americans is a problem, I agree. That rugged individualism we were taught has drawbacks such as you exacerbating negative attitudes. Community is important and a lot of people do not have that. I believe there are still small towns around the country that have this. I grew up in a big city, and do crave such a lifestyle. And I am not materialistic, or overly concerned about physical beauty. I didn’t grow up with money, as many people with a materialistic bent probably did. Yes, there is much wrong in this country. And the lack of care for neighbors is one of those things. But if people truly followed Christianity this would not be so. It is not that Christianity is missing something, people are missing something. And this environment is conducive to a lot of dare I say “wrong” thinking. But there’s no easy answer. It seems it should be easy to do the right thing. Apparently it is not. Go to this link and read this story. None ever checked on this woman as a child she was abused her whole life and nothing was ever done about it. Surely her mother and relatives knew– she was not even allowed to have a girl friend visit her. Certainly her teachers and classmates suspected something, but everyone went on their little life and noone ever tried to reach out to her. That is allI am talking about. Again, it is has nothing to do with religion or what country yu live in. Plenty of atrociities happen to women and children in all parts of Asia as well. Noone helps them either. For example, children are sold all the time for little money and used as slaves all over many parts of Asia - and NOoNE really cares as long as it doesn’t affect their life. The news articles say that if Josef Fritzl is found guilty, he will be sentenced to 15 years in jail.. which means he’ll be 88 years old when he gets released.
Is anyone else concerned that 15 years is not enough?? Just 15 years? For the lifetime of misery he has put that family through? Austrians, don’t let that happen. Please make sure he’s locked away for a long long time, preferably in his own cellar.

Please stop and think of what this poor girl went through at an early age. Then to be subjected to having offspring by her own father, kept imprisoned for 24 YEARS!
I’m sure many of us reading this appalling act of evil had a very good childhood and have given our children love and the best we can.
Not so in her case.

This man should be imprisoned in his own cellar for the rest of his life. Not only did he steal his daughter’s childhood, he stole the rest of her life. I have a lot of questions too. Pedophiles usually don’t have just one victim. Did he have other daughters? Did he abuse them too? He probably was raping the 19 year old daughter who is comatose in the hospital.

I have to say, in this day and age people are not unaware. Everything is now viewed as suspicious, basic simple behaviour can be seen as “perverted” nowadays…for example…Parents are not allowed to take photos of their children naked (ie in the bath etc), something our older generations didn’t think twice about, as it was so harmelss and had no other agenda other that how cute the kids were etc, nowadays it’s treated as child porn. No cameras in the swimming pools etc etc.

Do you know why we are so astonished for what happened in Austria? Because we are western people and we really believe in human rights: if it had happened somewhewre else, for instance in Saudi Arabia or in some other muslim countries we would feel very sorry for sure, but not astonished. In Europe we know very well that a father can close his daughter in a cellar with no food or water if she didn’t “behave” herself! For instance, if she loved a man, or even worse, if she has been raped!

Bring back the death penalty, or bury him alive in a room for eternity. There are more men like him in this world, and put isolated communities, towns and villages into closer scrutiny, especially remote and isolated countries may have such things and abuse going on. Its always good to live in cities, with lot of people not in isolated areas or remote areas.
I am sure there will be more cases like this in other countries as well, but does not go reported. Imagine if this was some country like India or Saudi Arabia, no one would breath out a word. I am sure such things happen there.

I have said many ,many prayers for Elizabeth and her children and cried many tears just at the thought of what these poor people have been through. Like you I hate this story but keep coming back for news of her .

I am so appalled by the innocent look in that girls’ face in the photo that is published in the newspaper(18 years old). The wrong was done by the authorities I think. Because, when the girl attempted to flee from home or the way she actually did try to run away and got caught.
Nobody was bothered to check the reason behind of her action. If some child protection authority or any system of that kind taken hold of that child in that moment and done a check. Then her abuse by the father would have revealed by it in the early stages. But, the relaxed system that is prevalent until now has given Fritzl the chance to exploit.
I put myself in that girls situation for a moment, GOD, It’s unimaginable. I don’t find fault with a particular race or religion for this unfortunate thing. It’s the social factor that has given rise to these types of crimes. Fritzl has seen Nazism, War, and Defeat of one society…and all this can lead to the stunting of the mind. So, it is our responsiblity to safeguard all our societies be they Whites, Blacks, Asians or anybody to prevent human beings driven to becoming Animalised in their minds.
Let’s Stop War’s taking place. Let’s tell our media to be more responsible in creating love and affection to other human beings. Unfortunately, War has lot of support world wide. I have forgotten take Elizabeth’s mother side of resposibility. If she was a very concerned person, she could have done some check on her daughter. I see a parental lapse here. There is a miss in the Mother daughter relationship. If Elizabeth is at a close talking level with the mother then most matters would have come to surface in the beginning. Atleast she could have hinted to one of her other siblings or a friend.
You know why I’m so ardent in getting deep into this subject? We can get a good lesson in their unfortunate experience. words cannot describe the horror felt by Elizabeth as she was dehumanized by this demon in human form. I do not believe any punishment which would befit this demon. Death is too final and not sufficient, imprisonment would be too short and present an opportunity for a holiday for him, especially given his short remaining life.
My only hope and consolation is the strength and courage which Elizabeth displayed, even in all this abuse. Her life exemplifies one of hope and the human will to live. It makes me put aside my petty problems for which i am prone to complain about and reflect on the gift of life which i now enjoy. Inspite of her torture, she still found it within her to care for these children and to run a ‘household’ in this dungeon.
i trust that God will strengthen and keep them and restore to them the years ‘the congo worm has eaten’.

In the west we have a saying that people in glass houses should not throw stones. When Muslims stop stoning women for being unfaithful (it takes and man and a women to be unfaithful – why don’t you stone men for the same crime), stop shooting school teachers for educating girls (shouting them in front of children as well), blowing people up in the name of Ali (which I am sure he would not approve of) then I think you will find your arguments will have a little more credence.

Thank you DUNCAN for your kind words and understanding of the issue. I went through almost all of the comments and some of them I agree and to some I did not but still I’ve read to understand each person’s view of the subject and their approach.
DONNA, NANCY, SONJA JOLIE.., all handled the subject politley and decently, I think. I liked their comments as well.
What I was clearly trying to say is that we as human beings should do something to train our mind to behave like humans. Once, when I was a small kid I saw a cockraoch crawling on my pillow on the bed. Seeing that and got angry I slapped the roach with a piece of wood which was lying there and then I took it outside put on the floor and crushed it until it became powdered. Then after soemtime I started thinking why I did that kind of a thing to the already dead cockroach. It was my uncontrollable anger forced me behave worse than an animal. It is this kind of small innocent things can make your mind be enslaved to animal behaviour.
The movie industry is one of the contributory factor towards animalising of the mind, I believe. We see in some movies, the villain after he’s been severely injured and out of action is finally being shot in the forehead to in the final climax scene. What is the lesson we learn from it? It’s pure vengence and animalising of the mind (to crush the cockroach to powder).
It is the same with normalising of obscenity. The social systems almost everywhere on earth has given a free ride for obscenity which has turned many crack minds to get addicted to vouyerism and so on. This is one of factors I see has lead Fritzl to see his daughter with the same view he has been addivted to view obscenity. His mind blocked the immortions and released the outpour of lust. So, it is a deadly blend of social acceptability of “modest obscenity” blended with a lapse of vice control systems.
This is purely my personal views based on informations I learnt through the media. I invite decent people to correct my view if it’s misunderstood by myself.

I heard that the oldest daughter might not make it. She has a form of Epilepsy due to being a product of incest.(that is what I read) If she does not make it he will be convicted of murder.
I also read that Elizabeths 18 yr old son will be a key witness for the death of the baby.. He was only 6 yrs old at the time. This story is just HORRIBLE all the way through. Josef showed his daughter very little mercy. It is a miracle that she has not only survived but managed to keep most of her children alive.
