wels hospitalHospital of Wels (Upper Austria) has purchased a new apparatus for investigation of coronary arteries without use of the catheter.

The coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major cause of illness and death in the developed countries. The new technology is able to help to detect changes in the heart vessels at their earliest stages, even when the patient could not feel the symptoms yet.

The new apparatus is called Dual Source Computertomograph. This is an X-ray machine with two parallel rotating X-ray emitters in which a computer directly builds a detailed image of a particular plane through an object from multiple measurements. The machine can precisely investigate the heart vessels even during rapid or irregular heart beats. Until now coronary arteries could be thoroughly investigated only by means of a catheter, which is brought there through a punctured groin vessel.

The equipment cost 1.7 million Euros. For the first time in the world the Dual Source Computertomograph was started to use for the patients in the Ludwig Maximilians’ University Hospital of Munich (Germany) in August 2006.
